When gauging the knowledge of students assessments are needed, however they must ensure that the assessing the actual abilities of the student not just the ability to remember and recall information. All too frequently, students are given assessments too often that do not measure their knowledge level, but instead emphasizing concepts that administrators find useful. These concepts are normally too vague and not relatable to the student and the knowledge he/she needs to continue to learn throughout life. Simply, administering assessments that are based on numbers, words, and vague concepts is not a useful practice for measuring the knowledge level of students. Majority of the communities feel that the private police cares more about trying to please their employer than protecting the public, but I believe that they are only doing what they was trained to do. It is certain quality that only allows the private police to do so much. To the average citizens private officers looks like a real police but they do not have the powers to do what a r eal police do. Public police comes with a lot of work, they are trying to protect and serve. I do believe it is hard trying to keep criminals off the streets without enough of force; they can not be everywhere at one time. Private police has the same authority as the city police. Conclusions I believe ways to maintain or improve the relationship is to have public meetings where all the force are there and discuss the ways they are similar and how each of them have certain responsibilities. In the article from what I understand private and public police are presented with what is called, â€Å"us versus them† mentality and both are doing their best to protect us no matter if they are private or public police, they are doing what they was trained to do. I also believe that once the public and private police have their meetings they should have one for the community, listen to their views and become their friends and they will probably feel safe calling them if needed. Social Promotion Social Promotion an evil in this Society Johnny is a fifth grade student who is almost ready to graduate and move on to the sixth grade. Johnny however, can not multiply or divide. He cannot spell or read. Johnny fell behind in the third grade. His teacher overlooked his failure and promoted him so that he would not be held up socially. Johnny's fourth grade teacher promoted him to fifth grade hoping that he would catch up with his classmates. Johnny is now about to enter the sixth grade with the educational skills of a second grader. The situation described above is called social promotion. It is the process of moving children through grades regardless of learning or skill. For years it has been the common practice in education to move students from grade to grade because of chronological age (Mitzel 468). Students should have an adequate education in order to be equipped for the twenty- first and twenty-second century. The injustice of social promotion should be ended and society must discover the best route to achieve genuine student success. Students who are socially promoted have no skills for life. The number of social promotions each year nears two million (American Federation Teachers). Social Promotion shows children that no matter what grade they achieve they will be promoted. This creates two problems. Students will not work to achieve; laziness is created in children. Second, the students who work hard and learn the material are often overlooked so that a teacher may help a student who is behind because of social promotion. Social promotion was brought to the attention of the country when President Clinton gave his State of the Union Address in 1999. In this address he stated many educational goals such as a mandatory third grade reading goal and the reformation of the school system in order to equip it for the twenty -first centuries. Along these same lines the President has called an end to social promotion. President Clinton proposed not just to hold back failing students but to do something about their failure. Such as remedial classrooms, identifying weakness before it is too late, strengthening learning opportunities and placing strong well-trained teachers in classrooms (Galston 35). If a student was asked in the nineteenth century what grade she or he was in they would probably say something along the lines of, I sit in the fifth row or I have a blue reading book(Mitzel 450). There were no grade levels, which is most likely where social promotion found its roots. Although Social Promotion is a newly arising concern today: it has a long history. The process of promoting students no matter what their academic success has been the standard in education thus far. For example in Chicago alone more than 40,000 children ? failed standardized tests (Berg A2). Why are student allowed to slip though the fingers of education? For one thing it is easier to promote the student from grade to grade than it is to deal seriously with that students learning problem (Economist 33). This is the main reason for social promotion. It is the theory of if it isn't looked at then it isn't there. Teachers and administrators do not want to accept failure on their own parts or the students. This is a case where the educational needs of children take a back seat to administrative convenience (Economist 34). Students keep getting promoted to the next grade without the knowledge necessary to survive. Often it is thought that if a student is promoted then they will catch up in the following grade. This sets the next class behind because it is filled with some students who have the skills and some that do not and should not be in that specific grade level. The next teacher is at a loss for what level to teach, should they teach down at the non-skilled students and risk losing the other students attention? Thomas Edison Saw the Value of Renewable Energy American inventor Thomas Edison often gets a bad rap from environmentalists. After all, he invented those incandescent light bulbs we are all so busy replacing with more efficient models.  He developed many industrial chemicals in conditions that would alarm modern environmental cleanup crews. And of course, he is known best for inventing or improving  a whole slew of power-thirsty electric machines and appliances- from the phonograph to the motion picture camera. Edison merged his own company to create General Electric, one of the worlds largest corporation. By the end of his life, Edison had been awarded more than 1,300 individual patents. Almost single-handedly, it seems, Edisons work at the end of the 19th century made modern civilization dependent on electricity- and the natural resources required to generate it. Edison Experimented With Renewable Energy More than a tireless promoter of electricity, Thomas Edison was also a pioneer in renewable energy and green technology. He experimented with home-based wind turbines to generate electricity that could replenish batteries to provide homeowners with an independent source of power, and he teamed up with his friend Henry Ford to develop an electric car that would run on rechargeable batteries. He saw electric cars as a cleaner alternative for moving people in smoke-filled cities. Most of all, Edison’s keen mind and insatiable curiosity kept him thinking and experimenting throughout his long life- and renewable energy was one of his favorite topics. He had a deep respect for nature and loathed damage made to it. He was a renown vegetarian, extending his non-violence values to animals.   Edison Favored Renewable Energy Over Fossil Fuels Thomas Edison knew that fossil fuels such as oil and coal were not ideal power sources. He was very aware of the air pollution problems fossil fuels created, and he recognized that those resources were not infinite, shortages would become a problem in the future. He saw the virtually untapped potential of renewable energy sources- such as wind power and solar power- that could be harnessed and put to work for the benefit of mankind. In 1931, the same year he died, Edison confided his concerns to  his friends Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone, who by then were retirement neighbors in Florida: We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel when we should be using natures inexhaustible sources of energy - sun, wind,  and tide.
